had a lovely day on Sunday. As it was shaping up to be the hottest day of the year so far, we headed off to the beach with our dog - she’d never been near the beach before so we though it would be a good new experience for her and we’d have fun too and get out of the house in the sunshine. There’s always so much to do at home, if you don’t leave it behind, you end up spending your life indoors washing/tidying/cleaning.
So we set off via Ormskirk where I went to Uni and sat in loads of traffic to get to Southport. I found out afterwards that there was a festival on, but we didn’t know that when we set off. By the time we’d waited 15 minutes in the blaring sunshine, it didn’t seem to be worth turning around and trying to find another way - we figured they were probably all as bad as each other, and so we waited and got there in about an hour, which isn’t too bad.
We got there and saw a MASSIVE sign on the boardwalk saying ‘NO DOGS’ with a picture of a dog with a line through it (like a no entry sign with a dog in the middle). We decided to go up to the booth though and ask where we could go, and the woman said ‘Dogs are allowed, it’s ok - just not on this bit).
WE wondered how many people had turned around and left because they thought their dogs weren’t welcome. There was a van driver who’d walked over to the booth while we were passing who she told the same thing - so off he went back to his van until he could join the queue again.
It turns out that dogs were allowed ‘past the second red flag and beyond the pier’. Problem is you can’t go underneath the pier in a car cos it’s all blocked off, so we had to park up and walk along the other side with Sal. So we parked up and attached her onto her long training lead (she’s usually very good but with so many other dogs and kids about and so far for her to run, we weren’t taking any chances).
Anyway, here she is trying to work out what this weird stuff she’s standing on is! Unfortunately I only had my phone camera so the photographs aren’t very good, but watch out!! You can make out a very mucky dog in upcoming photos

Then she discovered the water:

The sea was glistening in the distance, at least, we THOUGHT it was. It turns out that after around 3 miles walking, and an hour later, we could finally see the sea, still a fair distance away! Anyway, when we finally got to it, some guys came over in a little jeep and hoarded us towards the other side because the tide was coming in and would cut us off on the sandbank we were walking on. This then put us on the wrong side of the pier with the dog, but it didn’t matter, it was so far away, we couldn’t even see where the pier had gone.
After about 20 minutes splashing in the sea, Sally was absolutely shattered, and covered in mud and salty water. She was also really, really thirsty. We gave her a drink then walked her all the way back, headed up onto the pier and got some seafront chips, then walked back over the pier to the car ready to head off home for a good long sleep. She was so tired in the car that she was trying desperately to do that thing that kids do - keep her eyes open and make sure she didn’t miss anything, but then her head would flop back as she started to fall asleep - so cute
I went home and had a bath, desperate to get rid of all the sand, and when I finally got out of the bath I discovered that I was horribly sunburned all along my back and my arms. I had a little woollen cover-up although I didn’t put on sun-cream, which I usually always do because I burn so easily. I think I forgot because I didn’t expect to be out in the sunshine for so long, and because the wind was keeping us cool.
Anyway, it’s killing now, still bright red and sore. And I’ve spent the entire day in and out of NHS walk-in centres and my GP’s surgery for completely different reasons, so I’m feeling a little rubbish at the moment. But I’ve got some pictures of sally on the beach, for the very first time.
